What is a ‘Therapeutic Massage’?
Muscles that are contracted over a long period of time can produce ischemia (lack of blood) and limited range of motion, which ultimately results in pain.
The goal of Massage Therapy is to ‘unlock’ or release muscles and other soft tissue from their ‘locked-down’ position, thus increasing blood flow, range of motion, and the elimination of pain.
Deactivating ‘trigger points’ with techniques like Soft Tissue Release, for instance, can significantly restore range of motion to areas injured by repetitive work syndrome. And for injuries to tendons and ligaments, Cross Fiber Friction techniques are used, along with assigned exercises to help the body re-heal properly.
Most massage therapists learn one type of massage, and that’s it. They do what they do very well, but are limited in what they can offer their clients. For this reason, I study and draw from a broad base of massage and bodywork techniques. Avoiding the more esoteric approaches to alternative health, I focus mainly upon those modalities that can demonstrate measurable results.
By taking my clients health seriously, and understanding the biomechanics of their pain, I am able to help them return to their ‘pre-injury lifestyle’
My Philosophy of Massage and Alternative Health
I believe that before you can refer to any modality as ‘alternative’, it must first prove itself effective on a consistent basis. My goal is to one day start a school for healing arts, focusing on those alternative methods which are scientifically based, philosophically sound and noticeably beneficial.
I strongly believe that there is a balance to be maintained in life, whether it be in diet, exercise, entertainment, etc.
I break the concept of health down into 3 categories– Physical health, Intellectual Health, and Spiritual Health; all three being interrelated.
